arXiv announced multiyear philanthropic commitments totaling $17.2 million from Simons Foundation International, XTX Markets and Siegel Family Endowment, spanning three to five years, to support its transition into an independent nonprofit.
The funding targets three areas: technical infrastructure, ongoing operations, and organizational capacity — helping the 35-year-old preprint platform, which serves millions of researchers annually across physics, math, CS, quantitative biology, statistics and economics, complete its independence. CEO penelope lewis said the commitments put arXiv on solid footing for the long term.
