Sanders-Casar Ban Artificial Superintelligence Act draws fierce backlash from AI policy critics

Sen. Bernie Sanders and Rep. Greg Casar introduced the Ban Artificial Superintelligence Act, which would prohibit developing or deploying AI that exceeds human cognitive performance, pause advanced AI development until a new cabinet-level federal Department of Artificial Intelligence establishes review rules, and impose penalties including jail time.
Commentator Adam Thierer, reposted by AI czar David Sacks, slammed the bill as 'authoritarian thinking': corporate death penalties, a flat innovation ban, an unprecedented general-purpose technology regulator, and hints of hostile action against foreign governments developing advanced AI — which he calls a 'technological surrender' as China races ahead.
