OpenAI researcher Houda Nait argued on the MTS podcast that the US has roughly 10,000 rare diseases affecting 30 million people, yet fewer than 5% have cures. Pure capitalism, she says, makes it irrational for labs to chase treatments with such small patient pools—leaving children undertreated simply because too few share their mutation. As research costs drop thanks to AI, more labs are beginning to invest where markets once wouldn't.
