Auki clarifies AI retail CCTV demo: GDPR signage alone is not consent

Responding to criticism of its AI-powered in-store surveillance demo, the author clarified it was a tech demo built in a fake lab store and has never been deployed in real retail.
Key points: most jurisdictions require CCTV disclosure, which is also believed to reduce theft; but under GDPR, adding new AI analysis to existing footage requires a separate lawful basis. The EDPB explicitly states entering a clearly marked surveillance area does not constitute automatic consent. Even if the output is aggregate, the consent question doesn't disappear — shoppers' behavioral data is processed by AI without their knowledge.
