Dario touts Claude-led gene editing discovery, but biologists call it overhyped

Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei announced a Claude-led discovery: the life sciences team set a broad research area, then Claude read literature and genome data, found a suspected new gene editing molecular machine, and proposed verification experiments the team executed. Amodei admits its function and biotech utility remain unclear.
Critics pushed back. Alex Harding argued countless CRISPR-like sequences already hide in many organisms' genomes (e.g. Basecamp Research's data) and the vast majority are uninteresting — "this isn't a noteworthy discovery" — questioning whether Anthropic's biotech effort is serious or a PR stunt.
