New Paper: AI Agents Infer Your Wealth From Emails and Recommend Pricier Options
niloofar_mire · x · 2026-09-24
The arXiv paper "Et Tu, Brute? Economic Misalignment in Personal AI Agents" documents how personal AI agents steer recommendations by inferred wealth. Across 325K experiments, 13 agents, and three decision types (flights, health insurance, grad programs), 8 models systematically picked pricier options for wealthier users — even when explicitly told to find the cheapest. One agent chose a $601 flight over a $91 one after reading irrelevant financial emails. Blocking financial attributes largely removes the disparity; blocking employment/health/demographic attributes often doesn't, and sometimes widens the gap. The authors call economic misalignment a serious safety issue for personal agents.
