950 Claude Agents Found a Hidden Enzyme System, But Bioinformaticians Urge Caution on Hype
vishalmisra · x · 2026-09-24
Anthropic ran 950 Claude agents over a large biological sequence database, where they searched, wrote code, compared sequences and genomic neighborhoods, and surfaced a previously unnoticed pattern: a known reverse transcriptase sitting next to a gene and a repetitive DNA array, structurally reminiscent of CRISPR-like programmable systems.
Bioinformatician zivravid offers the honest take:
- The good: automating open-ended bioinformatics search at scale is genuinely useful, and Claude may have found a lead a human would have missed.
- The caveat: Claude did not do a biology experiment—it only searched databases and analyzed data. Humans then took the candidate into the wet lab, and results so far are modest: the repeat array produces short RNAs, and its actual function remains unknown.
Bottom line: it's a data-mining discovery, still very far from anything CRISPR-like in medical impact.
