Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei announced the Claude-led discovery of a molecular machine that the company suspects could represent a new gene editing mechanism.
He framed it within a recurring pattern: in 2023 models struggled with average high-school math; by 2024 they handled top-tier high-school competitions, in 2025 they solved minor open problems, and by late 2026 they are tackling the top open problems in mathematics. He believes AI for biology is on a similar exponential trajectory.
Amodei added that eventually Claude itself might safely perform experiments by autonomously controlling lab equipment, with appropriate safeguards in place.
