Altman and Amodei brief UN Security Council on AI safety amid growing scrutiny
nordicinst · x · 2026-09-24
OpenAI's Sam Altman and Anthropic's Dario Amodei gave separate AI safety briefings to the UN Security Council on Wednesday.
- Altman framed the choice: AI could be "a new renaissance of creativity and discovery, or a new industrial revolution of upheaval and disarray." Speaking 10 minutes, he urged governments to cooperate so AI is guided by democratic institutions rather than felt as "something being done to them"
- Context: alarm grew after Anthropic researchers warned this month the technology could destroy humanity within the decade; industry leaders have since called for slowing AI advancement and international safety cooperation
- Both companies face increasing scrutiny over product safety
The piece also notes Europe's Nordic countries and EU AI regulation could shape the safety path.
