Anthropic: ~950 Claude agents find novel CRISPR-like enzyme system in 21 hours
Dr_Singularity · x · 2026-09-24
Anthropic has formed a life sciences research group and built its own lab to use Claude for fundamental biology: scanning genomic datasets for uncharacterized protein families, generating hypotheses at scale, and validating them experimentally. In its first result, around 950 Claude agents working for 21 hours analyzed over 200,000 reverse transcriptases and autonomously discovered a novel enzyme system with CRISPR-like DNA repeats, with scientists providing only high-level direction. The post frames this as biology's version of AI-driven acceleration, echoing how restriction enzymes, Taq polymerase, and CRISPR all began with someone noticing something odd in nature.
