Toby Ord questions Epoch's 725x cost-decline figure: what isn't getting cheaper?
tobyordoxford · x · 2026-09-24
Oxford philosopher Toby Ord, in an exchange with David Roodman and Epoch AI, raises two caveats about dramatic AI cost-reduction claims: beyond how to represent the declines, he is uncertain about their exact scope—how many parts of AI services have not fallen in price similarly, and how those should be aggregated in. He accepts the 725x fall over 18 months on GPQA Diamond as solid, but notes it may not be representative of the whole picture.
