A Carnegie China study finds more Chinese AI researchers are staying home, making China the top destination for elite AI talent. Among the 2025 NeurIPS cohort (observed in 2026), 40.6% worked in China vs 34.2% in the US—a reversal from 27.1% and 46.4% in 2022.
