The Agentic AI Storage Shock: enterprise agents turn storage into the next bottleneck

Writing from Dell Tech World, Ben Bajarin argues the enterprise data layer is moving back to the center of AI discussions, and storage will become the next infrastructure gating layer for agent deployments.
- Agents change workflows: Claude Code/Cowork and Codex are early indicators — once a model gets read/write access to a working file system, workflows leave durable records of how work was produced, what context informed it, and what changed.
- Cold to warm data: enterprise data sits fragmented in docs, tickets, file shares, databases, compliance archives and data lakes. Humans navigate this via search and judgment; agents can't unless context is represented in a machine-usable way.
- Agent data requirements: retrieval, permissions, verification, write-back and retention of enterprise context.
- Ripple effects: pressure across the entire data stack — storage, retrieval, governance, observability, and access-control software. A V2 with new research on storage in the agentic enterprise is promised.
