Eidon AI, a robotics data collection startup, is shutting down after 2+ years. Founder Sam Padilla's postmortem: the thesis was right, but data as a business is brutally hard — a technical bottleneck doesn't imply a good business. They started in early 2024 with gamified multimodal data collection and are now open-sourcing everything, including a finger tracker with a <$30 BOM, URDF, and assembly guide. LeRobot has announced support for the hardware.
