Gmail's AI email scanning is on by default: the two hidden switches you must turn off

- What happened: Google has enabled Gmail's AI smart features by default, scanning emails and attachments including bank statements, tax files and medical letters; some chats may be reviewed by humans.
- Main switch (desktop): Settings → See all settings → Smart features and personalization → uncheck the Gmail/Chat/Meet option.
- Hidden switch: on the same page, Google Workspace smart features → Manage Workspace settings → uncheck both boxes. Both switches must be turned off.
- Mobile: settings don't sync across devices — turn off "Smart features and personalization" separately in the Gmail app.
- History cleanup: in Gemini Apps Activity, delete all-time activity to erase saved chats and stop future storage.
- Sensitive mail: consider Proton Mail (end-to-end encrypted) for medical/legal/financial emails; keep Gmail for newsletters and promotions.
