Pacing The Frontier: A New Framework Turns AI Slowdown Into a Research Field

A framework and research agenda by Raymond Douglas, Gavin Leech, David Duvenaud and 20 others proposes "pacing" — moderating AI development, deployment, and diffusion — as a dedicated research field. Key points: haphazard pacing already happens (safety-test delays, post-incident pauses, export controls); isolated unilateral interventions will predictably fail and can backfire; today's choices set precedents for higher-stakes cases; and the field needs systematic evaluation of each intervention's tradeoffs rather than one-off proposals.
