The author stress-tested 8 AI outbound-call agents with an identical brief: call a "dentist office," book a kid's checkup on weekdays after 3pm, spell a long last name correctly, pick a time slot autonomously, and confirm before hanging up.
Two product shapes
- Build-it-yourself platforms: buy a number, write the prompt, pick voice and model
- Managed services: just hand over a task
Key findings
- Retell: best call by far — no lag, refused the violating 1pm slot, spelled the name, chose 4pm on its own; but heaviest onboarding (email + phone + card + government ID verification for a real number), so the test ended up as a browser web call
- Vapi: free numbers hit a daily outbound cap; paying didn't unlock it — the only path was importing your own Twilio number, so no call ever went through
- Bland: locked out during phone verification
- AgentPhone (YC): needed $10 before outbound worked; spelled the name twice and hung up without ever confirming a time
- PlaceCall: fastest start — API key with free credits minutes after email signup; no voice/model settings needed; passed every test and honestly reported successbooked
Practical lesson: cross-check the API-reported outcome against the actual call, since some tools report results more honestly than the call went. Total effort: about a day and a half, mostly signups.
