Fields Medalist Martin Hairer has written a blog post on Proofs and Prompts addressing speculation about the Advisory Group on Mathematics and AI (AGMAI).
- Independence from OpenAI: Though the group formed after OpenAI's response to the "A Severe Misalignment of AI in Mathematics" statement, not all members were contacted by OpenAI, only the nine members take part in discussions, no one is paid, technical support comes from the IAS, and no documents constrain their public statements.
- Core mission: To represent the interests of the mathematical community as well as possible, with all nine members acting in good faith.
- Acknowledged limitations: The math community holds widely varying views and the nine are clearly not a representative sample.
