Arena Physica tore down DJI's 2019 Mavic Mini and 2023 Mini 4 Pro and priced every part — the first public cost breakdown. Key findings: 79% gross margin on a $139 BOM (vs Apple's 53% on iPhone); US-sourced parts would cost 2-3x more, cutting margins to 37-58%, so US makers can't compete in consumer. DJI's custom silicon jumped from 1% to 26% of the parts bill between 2019 and 2023, with all four key chips now in-house (GPS still from u-blox). Context: FCC's Covered List ban on foreign drones is in effect, 90% of US police/fire drones are DJI, and DJI holds 70% of the global market.
