South African Rights Groups Demand Moratorium on US Big Tech Data Centers

South African civil rights groups are leading some of the first coordinated pushback in Africa against data center expansion by US companies. Cape Town's Housing Assembly is calling for a nationwide moratorium until stricter transparency rules exist, arguing centers "jump the queue" for land, water and energy. Africa's compute demand could hit 2.2 GW by 2030 (5x current levels, per McKinsey). Investments at stake: Microsoft's $300M by 2027, AWS's $1.5B across Africa through 2029, and Equinix's $438M in South Africa.
