Responding to debates on whether ANNs should be more brain-like, researcher Aran Nayebi argues that for building a science of intelligence, knowing which biological details to discard is critical — ANNs operate at exactly the right level of representation. But for linking to biomedical diseases, modeling neurotransmitters and topography matters, and many in NeuroAI are already adding these components to ANNs even when not directly relevant to intelligent behavior.
