Netlify details the architecture behind Netlify Source, its built-in Git storage for agent-created sites.
Key facts:
- Over the past 12-18 months, users (and their agents) increasingly sent files directly via Netlify Drop, API, MCP, or Agent Runners instead of external Git hosts. Last month 93% of new projects were created this way, up from 70% two years ago — millions of new projects monthly, a 14x increase.
- Human-agent collaboration inherently needs Git semantics: WIP commits on branches, parent commits and diffs, takeover (pull), hand-back (push), and merging upstream changes.
- Netlify didn't want to become a Git host, but chose to give every project Git's benefits — at a scale of tens of millions of repos with performance, data integrity, and scalable unit economics.
