Baking Blender scenes to Gaussian splats: 14GB project becomes a 98MB browser-renderable splat
willeastcott · x · 2026-09-23
PlayCanvas' willeastcott demonstrated baking Blender scenes into Gaussian splats with striking results:
- Pipeline: 120 Cycles-rendered frames produce 3 million Gaussians in a 98MB splat, down from a 14GB Blender project
- Capture method (user Tom Dill's example): 60 orbiting frames at 5 heights around the body plus 60 close-up facial frames to capture pores, subsurface scattering and hair fuzz, all at 2048×2048
- Rendering: the splat runs in the browser via PlayCanvas with near-Cycles skin and hair quality
An interesting pipeline idea: trade offline render quality for real-time web viewing.
