OpenAI ships GPT-6 Sol and Luna at ~50% below GPT-5.6 pricing, with 90% cheaper cached reads

OpenAI launched GPT-6 Sol and GPT-6 Luna, bringing many of Astra's gains in coding, factuality, computer use, and agentic work into faster, cheaper tiers. Both are live in ChatGPT Work and Codex (Plus/Pro/Business/Enterprise/Edu) and the API as gpt-6-sol and gpt-6-luna.
Key points:
- Pricing: Sol is $2/M input + $10/M output; Luna is $0.10/M + $0.50/M — both roughly 50% below GPT-5.6 promotional pricing. Astra remains the top-end model; Sol is the production workhorse, Luna the scale/economics tier.
- The sleeper feature is improved prompt caching: cached reads are 90% cheaper with higher hit rates, and reasoning/tool changes no longer necessarily invalidate prior cached context — a major cost lever for agent and high-volume workloads.
