Oxford professor Yarin Gal says he encourages collaborations but requires every student to also lead and own their own project.
When reviewing postdoc or research scientist candidates, he ignores any paper where the candidate isn't first or last author. A PhD student pushed back: this culture produced strong 1-3-author first-author papers but left them behind on total publication count, hurting their job prospects.
