Academia is ill-positioned to police AI when its own house is a dumpster fire

Rex Douglass argues that academia, riddled with flag planting, credit squabbles, aesthetics, labor protectionism, and normative one-upmanship, is in an especially bad position to force norms on outsiders (AI companies) with entirely different incentives. Instead of a principled scientific take, you get the same resource-scarcity brawl every field has seen for decades. "Science!"
