Agent Substrate env: Open-Source Isolated Agent Environments, Eyeing Built-in Shell Access

Google engineer JBD (@rakyll) shared progress on agent-substrate/env, an open-source environment service on top of Agent Substrate providing isolated, stateful execution environments for agents — with remote command execution, filesystem operations, and built-in MCP tools. Each environment is a Substrate actor in an isolated container, with snapshotting, scheduling, idle-environment multiplexing, and routing handled by Substrate.
Responding to community requests, she says they're exploring exposing env capabilities (shell tools, filesystem operations) to actors as an opt-in feature and is soliciting feedback. The project is alpha, API may change before v1.0, with 95 commits and 49 stars so far.
