Huawei unveils world's first 3D data center, cutting electrical/mechanical delivery to 3 months

Huawei announced what it calls the world's first 3D data center, replacing traditional flat layouts with vertical stacking to address the space, power, and cooling bottlenecks of 100K-GPU-scale AI clusters.
- Four-layer vertical architecture: borrowing from chip fabs, the design stacks a cooling layer, IT equipment layer, power layer, and rooftop backup power. Vertical power delivery shortens the distance from power modules to racks from 17m to 5m and boosts IT power capacity from 76MW to 168MW at the same footprint.
- POD productized delivery: core electrical and mechanical systems are built as standardized modules prefabricated and tested in factories, with >90% prefabrication rate, cutting delivery time from 6 months to 3.
- Context: rack power is heading to 100-200kW and clusters are scaling from 10K to 100K GPUs, making flat layouts and longer power/liquid-cooling lines untenable.
- Operations: an AI-driven TMU liquid cooling controller detects leaks and predicts coolant degradation 7 days ahead, shifting maintenance from reactive to predictive; layered isolation minimizes fault domains.
Huawei also published a book and open design galleries to push AIDC construction from custom engineering toward replicable standard products.
