SoftBank has agreed to acquire the RAI Institute from Hyundai Motor Group; the deal is under CFIUS review.
RAI was founded by Marc Raibert (Boston Dynamics founder) in 2022, and its research powers the whole-body learning behind Atlas' acrobatic movements. Timing matters: SoftBank is simultaneously closing its $5.3B acquisition of ABB's robotics business — ABB brings industrial automation, RAI adds AI research depth.
