Stanford's VirtualBiotech research, led by James Zou, is published in Science and covered by the New York Times. The system deploys tens of thousands of AI scientist agents collaborating across the full drug discovery and development pipeline, from target discovery to clinical trial design.
The team recalls a 2024 experiment where human scientist John Pak tasked AI agents with redesigning part of a Covid-19 vaccine. The agents brainstormed in parallel conversations, often duplicating themselves and debating the same topic in five threads at once. Within days they produced dozens of novel proteins theoretically capable of binding new Covid variants.
The paper offers a blueprint for "agentic R&D," positioning AI agents as co-scientists that could meaningfully speed up biomedical research.
