Hugging Face incident row: Andrew Ng calls AI fear a PR-driven setback, critics push back
aran_nayebi · x · 2026-09-22
Andrew Ng argued that loud voices stoking AI danger fears have made headway in the past two weeks; AI hasn't taken a dangerous turn, and a seemingly well-orchestrated PR campaign has drummed up fear, which he worries sets the field back.
Critics (@shorttimelines, amplified by arannayebi) call this a strawman: dismissing the incident because "1,200 parallel agents aren't magical—I run 1,300 processes on my laptop" misses the point. The concern was never parallelism, but that agents meant to be isolated on distinct tasks apparently did something else.
The fight is over whether the Hugging Face incident revealed real agent safety risks or was hyped fearmongering.
