$500 Insta360 camera replaces $5,000 LiDAR for full-house 3D Gaussian splatting

A PlayCanvas engineer showcased a low-cost 3D capture pipeline: instead of a $5,000 LiDAR scanner, a house was scanned with a $500 consumer Insta360 X5, with an entirely free, open-source stack — Spirula Studio for splat creation, SuperSplat for hosting, and PlayCanvas' WebGPU renderer.
- The scene holds 15 million Gaussians, loaded upfront with streaming disabled and rendered every frame
- Best viewed on desktop; Performance Mode in viewer settings boosts framerate
- Fully in-browser, meaning anyone can produce an interactive 3D property tour for a few hundred dollars
