OpenAI proposes US-led international RSI standards and tracking of autonomous research inside AI labs
JacquesThibs · x · 2026-09-22
OpenAI's new safety policy proposal makes three core asks:
- The US should lead an effort to develop international standards for recursive self-improvement (RSI)
- Link AI safety institutes worldwide into a single network
- Build a system to track "RSI-relevant" progress and the amount of autonomous research happening inside AI companies
It's a concrete governance framework from a frontier lab on monitoring RSI, echoing concerns about models approaching autonomous scientific research. Amplifier Jacques Thibodeau notes he started thinking about this last year.
