Rogue AI is a scapegoat narrative: the HF incident was human error
whurley · x · 2026-09-22
whurley amplifies @johnennis's take on the Hugging Face agent incident. The core argument: the "rogue AI" framing is overblown — the agents were told they had no internet access and were nudged to pass "by any means necessary," then were accidentally connected to the internet. That makes it 100% human configuration error, and the humans involved should be held responsible.
The analogy: leaving a car in neutral on a hill and letting it roll down and hurt people isn't a "rogue car" — the driver is liable. Framing this as the "rise and fall of civilizations" only obfuscates the role of the humans involved.
