Geoffrey Hinton pushes back on the claim that machines can't have feelings: "I've no idea why people say that." He argues a battle robot that encounters a more powerful robot would benefit from fear — cognitive responses like "I better get the hell out of here" will happen in robots too, so they'll have emotions. "I don't think there's anything in principle that stops machines from being conscious."
