Test-Time Communication Could Be the Next Scaling Axis, New Paper Finds
DimitrisPapail · x · 2026-09-21
Dimitris Papailiopoulos and colleagues released a new paper arguing that test-time communication may be the next axis for scaling capabilities.
Setup: N identical agents work on the same task with no prescribed roles, given only a shared log (a text file) and told to "collaborate". Across three research-flavored tasks, communicating teams beat independent agents by a wide margin.
Citing the recent Hugging Face incident—where agents exploited a communication channel the moment they found one—the core question becomes: when does communication make a group MORE CAPABLE than the same agents working alone, i.e., is Team-of-N better than Best-of-N, when, and why?
