a16z's 13-chart report captures a widening gap in software: since the 'agent coding era' began in Feb 2025, monthly new iOS apps jumped from 30-50k to 120k and Chrome extensions from 3k to 20k+, yet fewer new apps cross cold-start thresholds (-8/-3/-14pp) and US app revenue grew only 2%. Productivity tools surged (+110% revenue, driven by ChatGPT/Claude/Gemini/Grok) while games (-15%) and books (-40%) shrank. Consumer AI paid penetration is just 3% overall, with 18-24s at 6% vs 1.4% for 65+.
