Inside OpenAI's agentic software factory: Codex takes over, IDEs and pull requests fade

Gergely Orosz (The Pragmatic Engineer) visited OpenAI and interviewed seven engineering leaders to document how the frontier lab builds its "agentic software factory."
- Codex takes over: within a year, Codex went from nice-to-have to the backbone of everything. Nearly all non-engineers moved to Codex and ChatGPT Work without any top-down mandate, all with unlimited token budgets.
- Death of the IDE & pull requests: IDE usage has declined since January as Codex usage surged; PRs and code reviews are being rethought.
- Agentic feedback loops: systems like Perf Factory monitor production and automatically dispatch Codex agents to fix performance issues.
- Changing tooling: hand-built internal tools are being replaced by Cod-generated solutions, alongside engineering challenges of serving a billion users.
