AI Cluster Bottleneck Isn't Chips — It's the Lasers Moving Data Between Them

The author highlights an underappreciated infrastructure problem: a billion-dollar AI cluster can sit idle as expensive processors wait for data. The chips work and the software runs, but thousands of processors must exchange data fast enough to act as one — and adding more compute only adds traffic to already-struggling interconnects.
He argues one of the most consequential contests in AI infrastructure is forming around chip-to-chip data movement, which ultimately comes down to small physical components: lasers.
