RL veteran Csaba Szepesvári: the illusion that things are under our control was always false
CsabaSzepesvari · x · 2026-09-21
Reinforcement learning authority and DeepMind researcher Csaba Szepesvári weighed into an X debate on AI risk, arguing it's unclear whether AI actually increases risk: the risk existed with or without AI — AI merely raises the perceived odds of someone discovering a dangerous 'magic formula'.
His broader point: the whole discussion reflects humanity's completely false illusion that things are under its control, an illusion that has never held and probably never will. A measured, epistemological take rather than doom-mongering.
