Jensen Huang says labs want relief from existing laws, not new regulation; safety advocates push back

NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang claimed AI labs aren't asking for new regulation but to be relieved of laws already governing them: "one lab had four cybersecurity incidents, another a couple more. And both have plenty of laws to deal with" — citing cyber, liability, product and SLA laws.

Nathan Calvin pushed back: "We have plenty of laws, so let's apply those first — does that mean NVIDIA, the new owner of Hugging Face, plans on suing OpenAI for the breach they suffered this summer? (I expect not)." He argued frontier labs likely want both safe harbors and new laws, while safety advocates want stronger enforcement of existing laws AND new rules for catastrophic AI risks that the ex-post tort system can't handle.
