NeurIPS 2026 Position Track desk-rejects 18.4% of papers flagged as AI-written via Pangram

NeurIPS 2026's Position Paper Track required papers to be substantially human-written, with AI limited to copy-editing. Partnering with AI-detection firm Pangram (zero data retention) and running multiple independent analyses to rule out false positives, the chairs enforced the policy: 178 submissions (18.4%) desk-rejected, and 123 (12.7%) asked to prove substantial human involvement or face rejection. The chairs argue AI-written position papers externalize verification costs onto reviewers and raise attribution questions.
