OpenAI's Astra drove a real robot arm, sparking speculation it was trained on robot data

OpenAI introduced Astra with the pitch that "anything you can do on a computer, Astra can do for you" — and this week it drove a real robot arm, going well beyond software tasks. Robotics AI researchers now speculate that robot data may have been used in training; a poll drew 786 votes with 84% saying GPT-6 Astra was "definitely" trained on robot data.
The robot foundation model field had worked from a different premise: robots need their own architectures, collecting demonstration data and feeding it into flow-matching policies that emit action chunks. A frontier LLM entering by treating a robot as just another tool has stirred the whole ecosystem — MIT's Phillip Isola framed it as an LLM acting as the puppeteer of a robot body.
