AI agents force academia to rethink credit assignment, junior researchers warn

Inspired by senior researchers like Jitendra Malik, Michael Black, Ken Goldberg and Phillip Isola, a junior researcher (Toru) points to the impressive recent Astra dexterous manipulation demos and raises two questions academia has no good answers to:
- How should credit be assigned when an agent synthesizes many prior works into a new research result?
- How can academia attract and retain talent when its incentive structure relies so heavily on credit?
He elaborates in a blog post and welcomes debate. Prof. Hank Yang (Stanford) amplified it, calling it a serious system redesign problem requiring all hands on deck.
