Andrew Chen: 400x cheaper inference could unlock ad-supported free AI-native apps

a16z partner Andrew Chen argues new models like Jev, reportedly >400x cheaper than general LLMs, will unlock ad-supported free AI-native apps.

Until now, apps calling LLMs on every screen couldn't cover inference costs with a few video ads or affiliate links, leaving only two paths: big-company subsidies or subscriptions.

Cheaper inference could usher in AI-native marketplaces, social networks, photo apps, email and collaboration tools — not generically powerful, but highly differentiated point solutions like a free assistant that filters your inbox, or hybrid stacks adding "wow" features at 1/1000th the cost.
