Software Is Receding: Personal Task Agents Become the Wedge for the Agent Platform Race

Manosai, a former product manager, published a longform essay "On The Future of Software, Part 2: When Software Recedes," arguing that personal assistants that can execute tasks have become the wedge for the race to agents as a platform.
The essay claims the new software paradigm bifurcates:
- The chosen layer: what still requires scarce human attention (expert tools, social connection, recreation);
- The invisible layer: everything else delegated to agents operating on your behalf, with consolidated interfaces.
The essay is structured in three parts: the old market equilibrium for software; five inflection points (ChatGPT, vibe coding and the AI IDE, models learning to think, the harness meeting the model, the second constraint breaking); and four consequences in the new world — how we build software, what software survives, how capital reorganizes, and the new market equilibrium. The author notes his 2024 predictions (LLMs collapsing the barrier to software creation, AI writing most code, design and human touch growing in value) have largely come true.
