Perplexity CEO Aravind Srinivas says the only reason open-source models trail frontier models by a 12-month gap is US export controls, which Anthropic has lobbied hard for. He warns the controls may backfire by pushing China to excel at the physical layer: China can build data centers far faster — power, permits, labor and expertise are all non-issues — potentially converting it into a far stronger AI competitor.
