Michael Levin: Intelligence doesn't need a brain — patterns themselves may be alive

Tufts biologist Michael Levin argues in a long-form IAI essay that the search for alien intelligence may be pointing the wrong way: extraordinary forms of intelligence may already exist on Earth. He contends intelligence need not live in a brain or body at all — it can emerge from any organized pattern, and the distinction between thinkers and thoughts is in the eye of the beholder.
