Sam Altman's 2005 Loopt pitch goes viral as investor dissects his two fatal bets

An old video of 25-year-old Sam Altman pitching location-sharing app Loopt to a diner stranger is going viral, prompting reflection that founders' first companies are rarely the ones they become known for.
Investor Antonio García Martínez pushed back on the idea that location apps were silly at the time — it was a core consumer category, and today's rich location data exists because of that generation of apps. He argues Loopt failed on two wrong-way bets:
- Wrong channel: Altman spent years doing deals with carriers like Sprint and Boost instead of betting Apple/Google would control the mobile experience — then the App Store launched and left him wrong-footed.
- Too early, wrong UX: Loopt assumed users would constantly share location as the core of the social experience (like today's Find My or Snap Map), but most users wouldn't.
The takeaway: the "Loopt era" is where founders learn to sell, hire, and raise long enough to find the real thing.
