Dario Amodei's three-step AI slowdown plan briefly unites rival AI CEOs

The Verge AI · rss · 2026-09-19

The Verge reports that over the weekend Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei proposed a three-step plan for slowing AI development: embedding third-party evaluators in labs, coordinating across the domestic industry, and forging international agreements possibly with government assistance.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, Google DeepMind co-founder Demis Hassabis, and even Elon Musk publicly seemed to agree on aspects of all three, and Anthropic and OpenAI had hinted that labs were working on some kind of joint effort. But the piece argues the AI regulation smackdown isn't over — whether this tentative consensus translates into real regulatory frameworks remains unresolved.
